Why Melanin Fleece Tights Exists — And Why Representation Matters

"We received some unsettling news about another brand selling our tights WITH OUR TAGS in them as their own! 😲 Thank you for the DM letting us know! If we’ve heard from one, we’re sure there are others out there who’ve received tights with our tags from others - and are consequently discovering our brand as a result of it.

Melanin Fleece Tights is ONLY affiliated with Melanin Fleece Tights - a black-woman owned business. The Melanin Fleece Tights tags speak to the hard work we put into the research and development of colors custom made for our customer base. From one woman of color to others! Any imitation is just that - imitation and theft of my hard work.

Thank you for your support. Thank you for supporting this black-woman owned business. 🤎"

In 2023, something unexpected happened.

Customers began reaching out to us after purchasing fleece-lined tights from other brands.

The reason?

The tights they received still had Melanin Fleece Tights tags attached to them.

At first, we thought it was a mistake.

Then we heard it again.

And again.

What this revealed was both disappointing and validating.

Disappointing because it suggested that other brands were attempting to profit from years of work we had invested into developing inclusive fleece-lined tights.

Validating because it confirmed something we've always known:

What we created was different.

More Than Just Another Pair of Tights

Before Melanin Fleece Tights, most fleece-lined tights were created with a very limited range of skin tones in mind.

For many Black and Brown women, "nude" tights were never truly nude.

They were often too light, too gray, too orange, or simply didn't reflect the beautiful diversity of melanin-rich skin.

As women of color ourselves, we knew there had to be a better solution.

So we set out to create one.

What began as a simple frustration turned into countless hours of research, testing, sampling, and refining shades that would actually complement deeper skin tones.

The goal wasn't simply to create tights.

The goal was to create representation.

The Work Behind Every Shade

Creating inclusive products isn't as simple as choosing a few colors from a catalog.

Every shade required testing.

Every undertone required adjustment.

Every sample required feedback from real women with real experiences.

We spent months refining colors because we knew how important it was for women to finally feel seen.

For many customers, Melanin Fleece Tights were the first fleece-lined tights they had ever worn that actually looked natural against their skin.

That's not an accident.

That's intentional design.

When Imitation Happens

As a small business owner, seeing your work copied can be frustrating.

But imitation also tells a story.

It means you've created something people want.

Something that fills a gap in the market.

Something that resonates.

What cannot be copied, however, is the purpose behind the product.

Melanin Fleece Tights wasn't created because fleece-lined tights were trending.

It was created because women of color deserved better options.

That mission continues to guide every decision we make today.

Supporting Innovation Matters

When you support small businesses, you're supporting more than a product.

You're supporting the ideas, research, creativity, and persistence that brought that product to life.

You're supporting the late nights spent testing samples.

The customer conversations that inspire improvements.

The commitment to creating products that larger companies often overlook.

Every order placed with Melanin Fleece Tights helps us continue building products designed specifically with our community in mind.

Thank You for Supporting Melanin Fleece Tights

To every customer who has shared our products, left a review, tagged a friend, or chosen to shop with us—thank you.

Your support has allowed us to continue pushing for greater inclusivity in fashion.

Melanin Fleece Tights is proudly Black woman-owned, community-driven, and committed to creating products that celebrate every shade of beauty.

Because representation isn't a trend.

It's a necessity.

And we'll continue showing up for our community—one pair of tights at a time.
